Gunman Opens Fire at Pennsylvania Hospital, Ends in Tragedy and Death

Tragedy struck a Pennsylvania hospital Saturday when an armed individual opened fire at UPMC Memorial in York, prompting an immediate law enforcement response. The incident ended with the gunman’s death, marking another instance of violence at a healthcare facility in the United States.

Incident details and immediate response

The shooting occurred at UPMC Memorial, a modern 104-bed facility that opened its doors in 2019. Hospital officials confirmed that while the gunman was killed, no patients were harmed during the incident. However, the full extent of potential injuries to others remains unclear at this time.

Susan Manko, UPMC’s vice president of public relations, issued a statement confirming that law enforcement was managing the situation on-site. As a precautionary measure, hospital administrators requested that off-duty employees remain at home.

Safety measures and family guidance

The hospital has implemented emergency protocols to manage the situation. Family members arriving to check on patients are being directed to gather at a designated safe location in the OSS building’s parking lot, situated across from the hospital.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has taken an active role in the response, announcing that he received a briefing about the “tragic shooting” and was en route to the scene. The governor confirmed that the facility is now “secure.”

The five-story medical facility, which serves the central Pennsylvania region, remains under heightened security as authorities continue their investigation into the incident.
