Federal Probe Launched into Michigan Health System Over Alleged Religious Discrimination

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is scrutinizing a healthcare provider in Michigan for allegedly dismissing an employee based on her refusal to engage in gender transition procedures due to her religious beliefs. The investigation reflects ongoing efforts to uphold the rights of healthcare workers to practice their faith without professional repercussions.

According to an official statement, the HHS Office of Civil Rights is examining if the healthcare system contravened the Church Amendments. These amendments ensure that federally funded entities cannot compel individuals to partake in healthcare services conflicting with their religious or moral convictions.

The healthcare worker in question reportedly sought religious exemptions from tasks such as using patient pronouns that contradict biological sex, as well as from participating in certain procedures she opposed on religious grounds.

“OCR is committed to enforcing Federal conscience laws in health care,” explained OCR Director Paula Stannard. “Health care workers should be able to practice both their professions and their faith.”

This incident follows a series of similar actions by the Trump administration, which has been active in safeguarding the conscience rights of healthcare professionals. In a recent case, HHS began a review of a hospital alleged to have compelled employees to assist in abortions contrary to their beliefs.

While HHS has not disclosed the name of the Michigan facility, the American Center for Law and Justice has been communicating with the administration about a separate incident involving Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where pro-life workers were reportedly pressured into performing abortions.

Earlier this year, HHS issued a release regarding an investigation into a pediatric hospital for allegedly terminating a nurse who refused to administer puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to transgender children due to her religious beliefs.

The Trump administration’s actions underscore its commitment, as noted in a January statement, to bolstering the enforcement of laws protecting religious freedom and conscience rights.
