Amid cheers and emotional scenes, Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher, and Emily Damari returned to Israel after enduring 471 days in captivity in the Gaza Strip. The trio’s release marks the commencement of a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, which promises the release of 33 hostages over the next six weeks.

Their homecoming was delayed due to a late notification from Hamas, but the ceasefire officially began just after 11 a.m., paving the way for their release. In Gaza City, the hostages were met by large crowds and Hamas militants before being transferred to Red Cross vehicles and then to an IDF post within Gaza.

Once across the border, Gonen, Steinbrecher, and Damari were welcomed by IDF and Shin Bet soldiers at the Netzarim Corridor. Their safe arrival was confirmed by the IDF minutes before 6 p.m., sparking celebrations among waiting families and supporters.

At the initial reception point near the border, the mothers of the three women awaited their arrival, leading to tearful reunions. Following initial medical assessments, they were airlifted to Safra Children’s Hospital at Sheba Medical Center for further care and support.

Emily Damari’s family later shared images of her with two missing fingers, a result of injuries sustained during the initial Hamas attack. “After 471 days, Emily is finally home. We would like to thank from the bottom of our hearts everyone who fought tirelessly for Emily throughout this difficult time,” said her mother, Mandy.

President Isaac Herzog expressed national relief, stating, “Romi, Emily and Doron — so beloved and missed — an entire nation rejoices at your return.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also conveyed his support, noting, “They are emerging from darkness into light. They are really going from slavery to freedom.”

While the day was filled with joy for these three families, the struggle continues for those still awaiting the return of their loved ones. Netanyahu emphasized the ongoing mission, stating, “You will, of course, leave your forward command centers open until we return them all — this is one of our objectives for the war.”
