Church Stands Firm in Support Amid Extortion Allegations
In a world where headlines often prioritize scandal over substance, a megachurch is drawing attention for its unwavering support of a pastor involved in a controversy. Just months after reinstating Sam Collier, Pastor of Christian Cultural Center’s Atlanta branch, the church’s leadership continues to back him despite serious allegations made by his ex-wife.
During a recent congregation meeting, Jamaal Bernard, the new senior pastor of the Christian Cultural Center (CCC) in New York City, addressed the gathered members to reaffirm their commitment to Pastor Collier. This comes after Collier was accused by his ex-wife of being extorted by a transgender male prostitute during their marriage.
“The Christian Church in America has struggled with two critical failures. The transition of leadership and the restoration of fallen leaders. Both have too often revealed a painful imbalance between grace and truth, leaving the church vulnerable to charges of hypocrisy,” said Jamaal Bernard, reading from a statement also signed by his father, A.R. Bernard.
He emphasized CCC’s dedication to accountability and grace, specifically noting their ongoing support for Collier despite recent media coverage that has highlighted his past issues. “Pastor Sam Collier came to CCC as an anointed and authentic yet flawed human, quite some time after the divorce from his ex-wife,” noted Jamaal Bernard.
Sam Collier previously served as Hillsong Church’s first black lead pastor in the U.S. His ex-wife, Toni Collier, revealed in a podcast that during their marriage, he struggled with a pornography addiction and was involved with prostitutes. Toni Collier stated that he disclosed being extorted by a transgender prostitute in 2023, two years before their divorce.
Supporting her claims, a police report filed by Sam Collier also mentioned extortion attempts, although it does not confirm any money was paid. In his report, Collier remarked, “He has already stolen money from me,” referring to the prostitute.
Grateful for the congregation’s support, Sam Collier expressed his appreciation during the January 4th meeting. “I’m grateful for organizations like CCC and Pastor Jamal, Dr. A.R. Bernard. When you have situations like this happen, the Church leaves you. And I’ve experienced that a lot over the last two years,” he said, highlighting the church’s rare stance of standing by him.
He acknowledged the challenges he faced, stating, “It’s been difficult because you have your integrity questioned,” but affirmed his commitment to his role and faith. Despite the hardships, he conveyed his determination to continue serving his community with the support of his church.
