The city of Atlanta, Georgia, became a focal point of national remembrance as family and admirers of former President Jimmy Carter gathered to pay their respects. The solemn occasion at the Carter Center highlighted his enduring legacy through his philanthropic efforts.
Marking the beginning of a six-day state funeral, a motorcade honored Carter in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, before proceeding to a private funeral ceremony at the Carter Center in Atlanta. A military escort respectfully conveyed his casket into the center.

He remarked on the week being a celebration of a “full and powerful” life, adding with a touch of humor, “it’s amazing how much you can cram into a hundred years.”
Though the family had anticipated this moment, it remains understandably difficult, he admitted. Chip Carter, sharing personal memories, highlighted moments from his childhood, such as his father’s help with schoolwork and storytelling during camping trips. He recounted the overwhelming support seen along the motorcade’s path as people gathered on overpasses, describing the experience as both moving and incredible.
Chip described his father as “an amazing man” supported by his equally remarkable wife, together effecting change in the world.
President Carter, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100, was widely recognized for his humanitarian work, notably with Habitat for Humanity, and his long-standing role as a Sunday school teacher in Plains, Georgia. Political figures across the spectrum, including President Biden and President-elect Donald Trump, offered their condolences, with Trump acknowledging Carter’s devotion to the nation despite their differences.
Carter will lie in repose at the Carter Center before his remains are transported to Washington, D.C., to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. A remembrance service is planned at the Washington National Cathedral, followed by a private family gathering in Georgia.
