South Carolina Pastor Josh Powell to Be Nominated for Prominent Role
Josh Powell, known for his leadership at Taylors First Baptist Church in South Carolina, is poised for a significant nomination. In June, during the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) — the largest Protestant denomination in the U.S. — Powell is expected to be nominated for president.
Jay Hardwick, a fellow pastor from Tennessee, revealed his intention to put forth Powell’s nomination at this important gathering in Orlando, as reported by Baptist Press, the SBC’s official news outlet.
Hardwick emphasized, “I’ve known Josh as a close friend for 30 years, and the word I use to describe his character and relationship with God over these 30 years is consistent.” He praised Powell’s integrity, love for God’s Word, and dedication to growing as a disciple of Jesus.
Hardwick also credited Powell with revitalizing a church in South Carolina, sharing that he witnessed firsthand Powell’s leadership in reviving the church with a focus on God’s Word and mission. He noted, “That church is thriving today in large part because of how God used Josh and his family.”
Reacting to the nomination news, Powell expressed gratitude on Instagram, stating his affection for Southern Baptists and his humility at the opportunity to serve them. He highlighted his belief in the SBC’s mission to reach nations, train pastors, and uphold God’s truth.
Powell, hailing from a lineage of SBC pastors, took on his role at Taylors First Baptist Church in 2021. His prior positions include pastoring at Lake Murray Baptist Church in Lexington, South Carolina, and First Baptist Church Fairdale in Kentucky. Powell boasts academic credentials from North Greenville University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Furthermore, Powell’s contributions extend to his presidency of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, trusteeship at Southern Seminary, and chairmanship at North Greenville University.
In related developments, Pastor Willy Rice of Calvary Baptist Church in Clearwater, Florida, had previously announced his candidacy for the SBC presidency at this year’s meeting.
