NY Supreme Court Upholds Pastor Election Amid Abyssinian Baptist Church Dispute

In a decisive ruling, the New York Supreme Court has upheld the election of Rev. Kevin R. Johnson as senior pastor of the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church, dismissing allegations of foul play in the church’s voting process. The court’s decision marks a significant juncture in an ongoing controversy that has captivated members of the 200-year-old congregation.

Judge James G. Clynes ruled against the lawsuit filed by four current and former church members, stating, “On this motion to dismiss, respondents (Abyssinian Baptist Church) have sustained their prima facie burden of showing that no fraud or wrongdoing occurred during the June 21-23, 2024, election process and that the petition should be dismissed as a matter of law.” He further noted that the plaintiffs failed to present factual evidence indicating any significant flaws warranting judicial intervention during the election.

Among the plaintiffs challenging the election were the Rev. C. Vernon Mason, Kevin McGruder, Jasmine McFarlane White, and Clarence E. Ball III. Their lawsuit sought to annul Johnson’s election, citing non-compliance with church bylaws and alleged bias. They also requested the formation of a new pastoral search committee and invalidation of all financial compensations made to Johnson.

In response to the court’s ruling, Abyssinian Baptist Church expressed relief and gratitude to its congregation, stating, “This has been a long journey, and we want to express our profound gratitude to our congregation and supporters for your trust, patience, and prayers throughout this process.” The church emphasized that the court’s decision affirmed the congregation’s voice and will, as they prepare to move forward with Rev. Dr. Kevin R. Johnson as their senior pastor.

Despite the ruling, the plaintiffs expressed their disappointment, asserting, “While we respect the authority of the Court, we do not agree with the outcome, nor do we believe it reflects the gravity of the concerns we brought forward in good faith and in great detail.” They highlighted their concerns about accountability, transparency, and the right to question governance without fear of retaliation.

The installation of Johnson follows the death of Rev. Calvin O. Butts III, who led the church for three decades until his passing from pancreatic cancer on October 28, 2022. The transition has been fraught with disputes, including a federal gender discrimination lawsuit filed by Rev. Eboni Marshall Turman, a former candidate vying for the position.

As the Abyssinian Baptist Church navigates these challenges, the court’s ruling marks a pivotal moment in its pursuit of unity and moving forward with Rev. Johnson at the helm.
