In an effort to address concerns about religious inclusivity, the Liberal Democrats are reviewing their treatment of faith-based members. This initiative follows the controversial deselection of David Campanale, a Christian candidate, which led to significant legal and public scrutiny.

David Campanale, a former BBC journalist and lay Anglican, was removed as the Liberal Democrats’ prospective MP candidate for Sutton and Cheam and replaced by Luke Taylor for the upcoming 2024 general election. Taylor currently holds the position of MP for Sutton and Cheam.

Campanale initiated legal proceedings after alleging a two-year campaign against him by party members and LGBT activists, during which he claimed to have been “mocked and abused in relation to his beliefs”. After an extensive legal battle spanning four years, the party admitted to unlawful religious discrimination and agreed to cover legal expenses. A settlement on damages is still pending.

In light of these events, the Liberal Democrats have tasked Richard Newby, a former leader in the House of Lords, with reviewing the party’s approach to members of various faiths, as reported by the Guardian.

The issues raised by Campanale are not new to the party. Tim Farron, who led the Liberal Democrats from 2015 to 2017, openly discussed the challenges of aligning his Christian beliefs with party leadership, particularly on issues like homosexuality. Farron ultimately resigned, citing incompatibility between his faith and his role.

Simon Hughes, a former Lib Dem minister, emphasized that the scope of the review should extend beyond Campanale’s case. He expressed support for the initiative, stating, “I believe it will allow the party to meet one of the two big objectives which David, [the] Lib Dem Christian Forum, I and others were seeking.”

Hughes also mentioned plans for a separate review once the Campanale case concludes.
