When Thomas Fahmy stepped out of his Staten Island residence during a torrential rainstorm, he had no idea that the next few seconds would completely change his perspective on life. Doorbell camera footage from that fateful day would capture an extraordinary moment that left medical professionals baffled and Fahmy convinced of divine intervention.

The incident occurred as Fahmy was heading to a scheduled dentist appointment while heavy rain poured down on his neighborhood. Security camera footage revealed the dramatic sequence of events—dark storm clouds overhead, sheets of rain falling, and then suddenly a brilliant flash as lightning struck directly near his foot at a white picket fence.

The immediate impact

The electrical discharge coursed through Fahmy’s body instantaneously. Describing the harrowing experience to ABC7 news, he recalled, “Once the lightning bolt struck me, the initial sensations that I had throughout my whole body were like completely unprecedented, tingling, numbness, pain, just I feel this burning sensation.”

Emergency medical personnel transported him to a nearby hospital where he remained overnight for comprehensive medical evaluation and testing.

Medical professionals astonished by findings

What physicians discovered during their examination defied typical outcomes from lightning strikes. Despite the direct hit, Fahmy emerged without any burn marks whatsoever. He expressed his amazement, stating, “No burns. I had multiple body exams, no burns at all.”

The significance of this finding becomes clear when considering the raw power of lightning. A single lightning bolt can discharge up to 300 million volts of electricity, generating temperatures five times hotter than the sun’s surface. Such extreme conditions typically result in cardiac arrest, severe burns, or extensive nerve damage in strike victims.

A response rooted in faith

For Fahmy, surviving this encounter without injury reinforced his belief in higher protection. His response was immediate and heartfelt. “I went on church Sunday to say thank you God,” Fahmy said.

The Staten Island resident’s experience has prompted him to reflect on gratitude and the importance of spiritual practice in daily life, particularly as he continues his recovery from this remarkable incident.
