Recent unrest in Nigeria has drawn sharp criticism from crossbench peer Lord Alton, who chastised the British government for its inadequate response to the violence perpetrated by Islamist militants. He contends that officials exhibit a “terrible lack of realism or understanding” regarding the situation.
With the largest population in Africa, Nigeria is almost evenly split between Christians and Muslims. According to Open Doors, the nation ranks as the 7th most perilous country for Christians, who face more fatalities here than in any other nation globally.
Although deadly incidents occur year-round, there is a noticeable increase in attacks during Christian celebrations such as Christmas and Easter. One Catholic bishop recently noted that these assaults have become “customary” during the festive season in certain regions.
The latest incident involved an attack by an ISIS-affiliated group, resulting in the deaths of 29 individuals in a village located in Adamawa state in north-eastern Nigeria.
Lord Alton expressed his outrage on X, describing the attack as “an affront and a terrible tragedy for bereaved families.” He lamented that “too many of these endless attacks have been ignored and followed by impunity and a lack of accountability or justice.”
He further commented, “You can trace the training and beliefs of IS Jihadists back to the ideology-driven Sudanese regime that succeeded in destroying their own country.”
Lord Alton also criticized Africa Minister Baroness Chapman’s response to a parliamentary inquiry about Britain’s assistance to Nigeria in preventing these attacks. He approved the government’s commitment that protecting religious minorities in Nigeria “remains an ongoing priority,” but he denounced the lack of acknowledgment of Islamist extremism as the root cause of the violence.
In his statement on X, Lord Alton remarked, “Following yet more deaths today, the refusal to name Jihadism, for what it is, reveals a terrible lack of realism or understanding by [The Foreign and Commonwealth Office] about what is driving the carnage.”
