Los Angeles and California Elections: Tight Races and Emerging Contenders

As the dust begins to settle from the recent primary elections in Los Angeles, questions linger about who will face off against incumbent city and state leaders in November. The mayoral and gubernatorial races are garnering significant attention as vote counting continues.

Amid the political landscape of California, Democratic candidate Xavier Becerra has secured a spot in the gubernatorial runoff this November. Becerra, who previously served as President Biden’s health secretary, is poised to make history as the first Latino governor if he advances past the general election. However, the contest for second place remains intense, with former Fox News host Steve Hilton representing the Republican side and billionaire Tom Steyer, a Democrat, vying for the progressive vote. As Frank Stoltze from LAist notes, “The progressive vote is coming in later in California, so there’s still a chance Steyer could secure that second spot.”

Shifting focus to the Los Angeles mayoral race, Karen Bass has emerged as a leading figure, yet securing only about a third of the vote. Bass faces criticism from voters dissatisfied with her handling of key issues such as homelessness, which, despite an 18% decrease, still affects over 40,000 individuals. The city’s infrastructure woes, combined with her perceived inadequate response to last year’s Palisades Fire—during which she was on a diplomatic trip to Ghana—have added to the discontent.

The mayoral runoff could see Republican reality TV personality Spencer Pratt or Democratic socialist councilwoman Nithya Raman as Bass’s opponent. Pratt, whose home was destroyed in the Palisades Fire, has tapped into public frustration, criticizing the city’s preparedness and introducing controversial views on homelessness. Stoltze points out, “The Republican reality TV personality essentially has said, all homeless people are drug addicts, and he offered simple solutions, like, all we need to do is to force drug addicts into rehabilitation.”

Pratt’s campaign has gained attention for its strong social media presence, including an AI-generated video depicting him as Batman and Bass as The Joker. This video criticizes the Democratic leadership, suggesting a public uprising against the establishment. Meanwhile, Raman has proposed a detailed strategy to increase affordable housing, contrasting with Pratt’s simpler rhetoric.

As the remaining votes are counted, the focus turns to whether Spencer Pratt or Nithya Raman will advance to challenge Bass in the upcoming runoff election. The outcome is eagerly awaited as it will shape the political direction of both Los Angeles and the broader state of California.
