A Bible that disappeared over a decade ago has reunited a pastor with a new believer in what can only be described as a remarkable divine appointment. The worn Bible, filled with handwritten notes from a teenager’s spiritual journey, traveled an unexpected path before fulfilling what its original owner now believes was its true purpose.

Paul Daugherty, who leads Victory Church, a megachurch located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, shared the extraordinary account on his Facebook page. The post quickly gained significant attention, receiving over 15,000 likes and more than a thousand comments from people moved by the story.

A decade-long journey

The story centers on a man named Clayton, who discovered the Bible at a shelter approximately ten years ago. During that time, he began reading through its pages, taking special interest in the margin notes and annotations that accompanied various verses. Over the years, Clayton would periodically return to the Bible, reading through the personal reflections and thoughts written alongside scripture passages. These handwritten observations would eventually play a crucial role in his spiritual transformation.

Recently, Clayton made the decision to surrender his life to Christ and began attending Victory Church. However, one mystery remained unsolved: the identity of “P. Daugherty,” whose name appeared on the Bible’s front cover.

An unexpected reunion

When Clayton approached Pastor Paul to inquire whether he knew the Bible’s owner, the pastor received an astonishing surprise. The Bible Clayton held was the very same one Paul had used during his middle and high school years—a Bible that had been missing for 15 years.

The physical condition of the Bible testified to its extensive use. The pages showed significant wear, and evidence suggested multiple readers had engaged with its contents during the years since its disappearance.

Reflecting on the remarkable circumstances, Paul shared his perspective on why his Bible went missing. He wrote: “God used my old, messy, scribbled-in Bible to save this guy’s life, who now is saved, set free, and brought his whole family with kids to church tonight! The WORD IS ALIVE AND POWERFUL!”

The impact of scripture

Clayton’s conversion through reading the annotated Bible demonstrates how scripture can work in unexpected ways. The teenage reflections written years earlier by a young Paul became instrumental in guiding another person toward faith. Clayton has since brought his entire family, including his children, to church services at Victory.

The account illustrates the enduring power of biblical text to transform lives across time and circumstances. As noted in Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
