A 28-year-old man has been charged with the murder of renowned politician Ann Widdecombe, drawing widespread attention to the ongoing investigation. The tragic event has sparked discussions about potential motives behind the crime.
The accused, Joshua Kerry from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was apprehended shortly after Widdecombe was discovered with severe injuries at her residence near Dartmoor on July 9. He was officially charged two days later.

Frank Ferguson, Chief Crown Prosecutor, stated, “We have decided to prosecute Joshua Kerry for murder following a police investigation into the death of Ann Widdecombe in Haytor, Dartmoor.”
Ferguson emphasized that the investigation is still active, exploring possible political or terrorist motives. He noted, “Our prosecutors have worked closely with the police to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court, and we will continue working with them as their investigation progresses.”
He further urged caution regarding public discourse on the matter, stating, “It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
Ann Widdecombe, aged 78, had a distinguished career as a Conservative minister during John Major’s tenure and later as an immigration spokesperson with the Reform party. Her television appearances on shows like Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother brought her renewed fame in her later years.
The initial probe into Widdecombe’s death was conducted by Devon and Cornwall Police. However, this responsibility was transferred to Counter Terrorism Policing after new evidence surfaced. Authorities believe that the attack occurred the day before her body was discovered.
