When a group of senior citizens in Middle Tennessee showed up for a special community event, they were greeted with something unexpected: a giant slip-and-slide waiting just for them. What followed was a day filled with laughter, speed, and pure childhood joy as residents rediscovered the simple pleasure of sliding across a water-soaked surface.
Senior Helpers and AdamsPlace partnered to create what they dubbed the “ride and slide” event, bringing together multiple community organizations to help make the day a success. The Murfreesboro Fire Department played a crucial role by hosing down the slide throughout the day and providing assistance to help participants safely mount and dismount the slippery attraction.
Community support made the event possible
The MTSU football team and cheerleaders volunteered their time to transport seniors on large inflatable floats, pulling them along to ensure everyone could participate regardless of mobility limitations. This collaborative effort demonstrated how different segments of a community can come together to create memorable experiences for older adults.
The enthusiasm among participants was undeniable. One resident who had already made four trips down the slide couldn’t contain her excitement. “That was fast,” she said, her smile reflecting the thrill of the experience.
More than just entertainment
Organizers and volunteers recognized the deeper significance of the event beyond mere recreation. “It builds hope and love,” one volunteer explained. “They’ll be like, oh you made my day today. It’s a blessing just to make people happy.”
The most touching moment came when a resident living with both dementia and Parkinson’s disease participated in the activity. His wife witnessed the experience from the sidelines, recognizing it as a meaningful milestone following a particularly challenging period. “So much joy to see them,” she said. “It makes me so happy.”

The event served as a reminder that age shouldn’t be a barrier to experiencing joy and revisiting beloved activities from earlier years. By creating opportunities for seniors to engage in playful activities typically associated with youth, communities can enrich the lives of older adults and help them maintain a positive outlook and sense of vitality.
