In an era when marriages often struggle to survive even a few years, a Minnesota couple has achieved something extraordinarily rare. Betty and Kermit Eastman of St. Cloud, both 99 years old, recently marked 80 years of marriage, making them one of the rarest pairs on the planet.
The statistics surrounding their achievement are staggering. According to available data, only one American couple on average reaches 80 years of marriage each year. From a global perspective, the odds are even more remarkable—only one in six million couples ever reach this milestone. The Eastmans celebrated their incredible 80th anniversary on June 6, surrounded by an extensive family that includes two children, five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren at their daughter’s home.
How it all began
The couple’s love story began in Thief River Falls, where a young Kermit found himself repeatedly walking past Betty’s house after she moved into the neighborhood. His intentions weren’t exactly subtle.
“I remember one time her dad said to her ‘I wonder what that Eastman boy is doing walking up and down the sidewalk'” Kermit said.
Their courtship faced immediate challenges when Kermit left high school to serve in the Navy during World War II. His service proved harrowing—his ship, the U.S.S. Mullany, was struck by a Japanese kamikaze pilot during combat.
“We were hit by a suicide plane. We lost quite a few guys. About 20 I think” he said.
An unconventional start to married life
After Kermit returned home from the war, the couple married and did something quite unusual for the time—they both returned to complete their high school education as a married couple. They even attended prom together as husband and wife, a circumstance few couples could claim. Following their graduation, Kermit pursued higher education and eventually became a school superintendent in St. Cloud, where they established their family and spent their lives together.
Simple wisdom from eight decades together
When asked about the secret to their enduring marriage, the Eastmans offered straightforward advice without complicated explanations.
“Just don’t keep secrets and be honest” Betty said.
“Tell it like it is. Just live every day. Every day is a gift” Kermit said.
Their approach emphasizes transparency, honesty, and gratitude—principles that have clearly served them well through 80 years of partnership. The couple’s remarkable journey from wartime separation to achieving one of the rarest marital milestones demonstrates that lasting love is possible when built on a foundation of trust, openness, and appreciation for each day together.
