FlyDubai flight FZ1073 experienced a shocking mid-air attack that could have ended in catastrophe, but a combination of brave actions from the wounded captain, quick-thinking passengers, and off-duty pilots onboard resulted in what survivors are calling a divine miracle. The 180 people aboard, including 166 Israeli citizens, are now safely home after the harrowing ordeal.

The Boeing 737 departed Dubai in the early morning hours bound for Tel Aviv, initially experiencing a routine flight. However, approximately two hours and 15 minutes into the journey, at around 8:20 am, the situation turned dire when the Omani co-pilot launched a violent knife attack against Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot in command.

Attack in the cockpit leads to rapid descent

Officials describe the assault as a deliberate hijacking attempt intended to crash the aircraft. During the struggle for control between the two pilots, the plane entered a steep dive, plummeting 17,400 feet in less than two minutes—a descent rate that typically proves fatal.

Despite suffering severe stab wounds and heavy bleeding, Captain Machchhar fought against his attacker and managed to unlock the cockpit door, an action that proved pivotal in preventing disaster. Passengers seated near the front of the aircraft heard cries for help and witnessed a woman peer into the cockpit before reacting in horror to the scene of violence.

Passengers and off-duty pilots take action

Several passengers immediately rushed forward to subdue the attacker. In a fortunate turn of events, two off-duty relief pilots happened to be traveling in the passenger cabin. Once alerted to the emergency, they took control of the aircraft while an Israeli dentist among the passengers provided critical first aid to the bleeding captain.

The relief pilots successfully stabilized the jet and executed an emergency landing at Tabuk airport in Saudi Arabia. After hours of waiting, a rescue flight transported all passengers and crew safely back to Israel.

Official praise for heroic actions

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement commending the remarkable actions that averted tragedy. Netanyahu noted “Despite being stabbed and seriously injured he fought back resisted opened the cockpit door and enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker”. He described the captain as a hero who saved 174 lives.

Upon arrival at Ben Gurion International Airport in Israel, passengers expressed overwhelming gratitude for their survival, with many attributing their safe return to divine intervention. Survivors sang traditional Hebrew songs including “Ve’she’amda” and “The Holy One, blessed be He, always loves me.”

Passenger Lital Shachaf captured the sentiment of many when she stated “I just can say that it was a miracle. It was awful crazy and we thank God that we survived it”.
