Mishal, a 21-year-old woman, bears both visible and invisible scars from her past. The physical marks beneath her eye and on her throat are constant reminders of the violence she endured. However, the psychological scars of betrayal and fear run deeper, casting a shadow over her daily life.
Her early years, which should have been filled with hope and promise, were instead marked by a struggle for survival. Instead of planning her future, she was forced to navigate a landscape of threats and coercion, all while trying to protect herself and her child.
For three and a half years, Mishal lived in a state of captivity, enduring physical and emotional abuse. Despite the trauma, her faith and determination to safeguard her daughter remained unbroken.
At the age of 18, Mishal was abducted and confined, experiencing torture, religious conversion, and isolation. She eventually managed to escape with her baby daughter.
Born into a poor Christian family and the youngest of four sisters, Mishal was unable to attend school. Instead, she began working in a beauty salon to support her family. Her life took a drastic turn when a client introduced her to Ali Haider.
Initially, Ali’s unwanted attention manifested as persistent phone calls, which escalated into harassment. Despite Mishal’s clear refusal based on her Christian faith and family values, Ali continued to pursue her.
Under false pretenses, Mishal was taken to a location where she was coerced into signing documents she could not read. She was informed of her conversion to Islam and given a new name, “Fatima.” When she resisted, she was physically assaulted.
That night, Mishal was forcibly taken from her family home by armed men. In captivity, she faced ongoing abuse and humiliation. Pregnant and isolated, she gave birth to her daughter, Ayat.
The violence escalated, culminating in a brutal assault by Ali that endangered both Mishal and her child. Neighbors intervened, and with police assistance, Mishal and her daughter were rescued. Despite filing an FIR, the quest for justice has been slow and fraught with further threats.
Back with her family, Mishal lives in fear as Ali continues to threaten her. Legal actions are underway, including a harassment petition and divorce proceedings, to ensure her safety and freedom.
Mishal’s story highlights the vulnerability of young, uneducated minority girls in Pakistan who lack protection and legal support. Her desire now is simply to live freely and safely with her daughter, practicing her faith without fear.
The Centre for Legal Aid, Assistance and Settlement (CLAAS) is an interdenominational organization working for Christians who are being persecuted because of their faith in Pakistan.
