After nearly half a year in incommunicado detention, a Protestant pastor in Nicaragua has been set free, marking a significant development in an ongoing complex situation. Pastor Rudy Palacios Vargas, detained since mid-July, has had his freedom restored, however, with limitations.

On 17 July 2025, Pastor Vargas was apprehended in Jinotepe, Carazo Department, amid a series of operations executed by both official police and masked “volunteers.” This clampdown also saw the detention of his sister, Jéssica Palacios Vargas, brothers-in-law Pedro José López and Armando José Bermudez Mojica, political activist Mauricio Alonso Petri, Petri’s son Mauricio Alonso Estrada, and family friend Olga María Lara Rojas.

The Mechanism for the Recognition of Political Prisoners in Nicaragua confirmed through a statement on X that Pastor Vargas, alongside his family members and Mauricio Alonso Estrada, were among 20 political prisoners released from their detention on 10 January.

However, Pastor Vargas, his sister, and Armando José Bermudez Mojica now face house arrest, with their movements being closely monitored. In contrast, Olga Lara Rojas, Mauricio Alonso Estrada, and Pedro José López have been freed under “precautionary measures,” mandating them to report regularly to local authorities.

The situation takes a somber turn with the death of Mauricio Alonso Petri in August, while still in custody.

Anna Lee Stangl, director of advocacy and Americas team leader at Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), commented, “While we are grateful that these individuals will be reunited with some of their loved ones after nearly six months in incommunicado detention, neither Pastor Rudy Palacios Vargas nor his friends and family members should be under house arrest or precautionary measures.

“Their release does not undo the injustice committed against them. We call on the government of Nicaragua to grant them their full freedom without condition, and to immediately release all remaining political prisoners including Pastor Efrén Antonio Vílchez López.

“We call on the international community to maintain pressure on the Ortega-Murillo regime to ensure human rights are upheld and that their crimes do not go unpunished.”

Pastor Efrén Antonio Vílchez López remains incarcerated, with his imprisonment dating back to May 2022 for criticizing government violence during the 2018 protests. He is currently serving a 23-year sentence, which CSW labels as based on “false charges.”
