Nicki Minaj, the renowned rapper, is embracing her faith once again, sharing insights into her spiritual journey and voicing support for persecuted Christians globally. Her music career, while successful, has posed challenges to her spiritual life, a topic she discussed with Erika Kirk at the Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in Phoenix, Arizona.

The 43-year-old artist, known recently for her advocacy on behalf of Christians facing persecution, especially in Nigeria, recounted how her early religious upbringing in Trinidad has influenced her life. She shared memories of being encouraged by her grandmother to pray whenever disputes arose among siblings.

Minaj reflected, “So, later on in my life, well, now it’s not much later when I was like 10, 11, 12, I started going to church in New York, and, it changed everything, changed my life for the better because I was going every week, I was hearing the Word of God be preached, and then I was going home and I was applying it to my life, even as a little girl, I learned how to pray very early.”

Her baptism at 13 marked a pivotal moment, yet as Minaj acknowledges, the demands of the music industry have sometimes distanced her from her faith. “Sometimes, I would wake up and feel so far removed from … fellowship,” she admitted, noting how work commitments often interfered with her church attendance.

This renewed focus on spirituality feels akin to reconnecting with an old friend, Minaj described, and she emphasized the importance of faith for young individuals. “Wherever you are and whenever you need it, you have something that you can tap into immediately. It’s immediate,” she expressed. “You don’t have to leave a message. He’s not going to call you back. He’s there immediately for you. Call on Him, and on the first ring, He’s going to answer.”

Minaj also highlighted her deep appreciation for the freedom of worship in the United States and her emotional connection to Nigeria, partly due to her Nigerian pastor. Her social media platforms have become avenues to raise awareness about the violence against Christians in the region.

“That should spark outrage in the great America, and that’s what it’s doing. And again, we’re not backing down anymore. We are not going to be silenced by the bullies anymore. OK?” Minaj stated passionately. “Know that. Hear that. Receive that. Bullies. We won’t be silenced ever again. We will speak up for Christians wherever they are in this world.”

Amidst rising violence, the U.S. State Department announced visa restrictions for Nigerians linked to religious freedom violations. This decision comes as extremist groups continue to wreak havoc in Nigeria, with reports of numerous killings and abductions.

Organizations like Open Doors have consistently raised alarms, placing Nigeria high on its 2025 World Watch List for Christian persecution. Despite government denials of religious motivations behind the violence, Nigeria has pledged to enhance security efforts, a move backed by U.S. diplomatic pressure.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent directive to recruit 20,000 new police officers underscores the urgent need for increased security. Meanwhile, a $5.1 billion health agreement between the U.S. and Nigeria aims to bolster Christian healthcare services.

Minaj’s support for these initiatives was evident during her keynote address at a U.S. Mission to the United Nations event, where she commended the Trump administration’s efforts regarding Nigeria.
