East Coast Faces Severe Weather as Nor’easter Approaches

Communities along the U.S. East Coast are bracing for a powerful nor’easter that has already left thousands without power and caused significant flooding in parts of New Jersey. The storm poses a major threat through the weekend, with dangerous weather conditions anticipated for millions in its path.

As the storm begins to impact the region, coastal areas, especially in New Jersey and Delaware, are preparing for severe flooding. The National Weather Service warns that the Mid-Atlantic coast will experience the brunt of the storm’s impact, with strong winds and heavy rain already making their presence felt.

Flooding in New Jersey

Surf City, a coastal borough in New Jersey, has reported streets submerged under water, with waves lapping at homes. Approximately 34 miles away in Manasquan, local authorities have issued voluntary evacuations due to rising water levels. Mayor Mike Mangan expressed concerns about sustained flooding, stating, “a lot of water in the streets for a long time” is expected.

Concerts and flights across the East Coast have been disrupted. Many airlines have canceled flights to Boston, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard, with waivers on change fees offered for affected travelers.

Preparations in Sea Bright

Sea Bright, another New Jersey beach community, is gearing up for winds reaching up to 50 mph and potential flooding of up to 6 feet. “It’s going to be worse than average,” said Mayor Brian Kelly. He likened the potential flooding to the 2011 hurricane Irene and urged residents in low-lying areas to consider evacuation. The town’s recreation center has been designated as a shelter for evacuees.

Wind Threats in New England

In New England, the storm could bring wind gusts as high as 65 mph to areas like Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket, while Boston may experience gusts up to 55 mph. Meteorologist Matthew Belk pointed out, “the closer to the coast you are, the more impacts from the storm you’re likely to see.” The threat of downed power lines and tree limbs looms large, as foliage remains on trees, increasing wind resistance.

Wind gusts along the New Jersey and Delaware coasts could also reach 60 mph. In southeastern Connecticut and eastern Long Island, similar conditions are expected, potentially leading to power outages.

Disruptions to Travel and Events

The storm has led to over 200 flight cancellations in Boston, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and New York, with more anticipated over the weekend. The Red Sox have rescheduled their series against the Chicago Cubs, and Ed Sheeran’s concerts in Foxborough, Massachusetts, have been canceled.

Ferry services to Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Block Island have been suspended due to adverse weather. Sean Driscoll, a spokesperson for the Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket Steamship Authority, noted that such disruptions are a regular part of life for island residents, who often have contingency plans.

In Gloucester, Massachusetts, Ashley Destino prepared for the storm by securing her boat and ensuring her family had a generator ready. “We came to the beach on Friday afternoon because we knew we were going to be inside all weekend,” she said, preparing activities for her children as the storm set in.
