NPR Launches Exciting Podcast Challenge for Seniors
Calling all creative seniors! NPR invites U.S. residents aged 65 and over to participate in the 2026 NPR Senior Podcast Challenge. This unique opportunity allows seniors to share their stories and potentially have their podcasts featured on NPR’s renowned programs.

About the Contest
The NPR Senior Podcast Challenge, sponsored by National Public Radio, Inc. (NPR), encourages seniors to submit original audio files they’ve created. These submissions will be judged, and the winning podcast will be discussed in a segment on NPR’s “All Things Considered” or “Morning Edition.” Up to eight finalists will be selected, with seven receiving trophies and NPR-branded merchandise, while one Grand Prize Winner will receive a trip to NPR Headquarters and have their podcast featured across NPR’s platforms.
Submission and Judging Timeline
The contest submission period runs from August 16, 2026, at 12:00 a.m. ET to November 30, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET. The judging period starts on December 1, 2026, and concludes around January 15, 2027. NPR will attempt to notify finalists and the Grand Prize Winner by January 15, 2027, with public announcements expected by February 1, 2027.
Eligibility Criteria
The contest is open to U.S. residents aged 65 and older. Joint submissions are allowed, but each participant must meet the age requirement. Employees of NPR, their affiliates, and immediate family members are not eligible to enter. Entry confirms that participants meet all eligibility requirements stated in the official rules.
How to Enter
Entrants must submit an original audio file between 3 and 8 minutes long, created specifically for the contest. Submissions should be uploaded to SoundCloud, Podbean, or Anchor with download capabilities enabled. Entrants must adhere to the platform’s terms of use and ensure that their submissions do not infringe on any intellectual property rights.
The podcast topics are open-ended but suggestions include “Adjusting to retirement,” “New adventures,” “Health concerns,” and “Stories of family history.” Original music composed and performed by the entrant(s) may be included. For more information on public domain works, visit here.
Judging Criteria
Submissions will be judged on:
- 40% Information and Structure: Does the podcast tell a compelling story or teach something new?
- 40% Personality and Creativity: Are the voices engaging and unique?
- 20% Production Quality: Is the audio clear and well-edited, even if recorded with basic equipment?
Prizes
Finalists will receive a trophy and NPR merchandise valued at $150. The Grand Prize includes a trip to NPR Headquarters in Washington, D.C., worth approximately $2,300, featuring roundtrip travel, accommodations, and a segment on NPR discussing their podcast. The total prize value for the contest is $3,350.
