Pastor’s Conviction Sparks Debate Over Freedom and Safe Zones

In a case that has sparked significant discussion on religious freedom and legal boundaries, a retired pastor, Clive Johnston, has been deemed guilty of infringing an abortion clinic’s ‘safe access zone’ law. The ruling followed his sermon on John 3:16 at an outdoor service.

At 78, Pastor Johnston was convicted by a district judge at Coleraine Magistrates in Northern Ireland, facing charges under the Abortion Services (Safe Access Zones) Act. His open-air service took place near the buffer zone of Causeway Hospital in Coleraine in July 2024.

The consequences of this conviction include a criminal record and substantial fines, as reported by The Christian Institute, which is supporting Johnston. The former President of the Association of Baptist Churches in Ireland is considering an appeal against the decision.

Johnston, reflecting on the verdict, stated, “We held a small, open air Sunday service near a hospital. We made no reference whatsoever to the issue of abortion. And yet the buffer zones law is so broad that holding a Sunday service has been found to be a criminal offence. And at 78 years of age I find myself, for the first time, convicted of a crime.”

He added that his actions did not involve harassment, as evidenced by police video and acknowledged by all parties involved. “If someone is out there causing trouble, stirring up violence, harassing or verbally attacking people, then, absolutely, go ahead and prosecute them,” he explained.

The contested Bible passage, John 3:16, is well-known for its message: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Simon Calvert, Deputy Director of The Christian Institute, voiced criticism before the court hearing, asserting that the verse “is a wonderful, famous verse and everyone knows it says nothing about abortion”. He accused authorities of “overstepping the mark” by equating Gospel preaching with abortion protest.

“We have amazing freedom in this country to share the Christian message. That’s why we’ve taken on this case,” Calvert stated. He further remarked that prosecuting Johnston for sharing the Gospel near a hospital on a calm Sunday is a troubling attempt to curb religious and speech freedoms in a region where open-air Gospel services are culturally ingrained.
