Jamaican Recovery Efforts Receive Support from U.S. Church After Hurricane Melissa

In a bid to support the recovery efforts in Jamaica following the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa, Pastor Jamal Bryant of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church has pledged both prayer and direct assistance to the island nation. During a virtual meeting with Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Bryant committed to visiting Jamaica to aid in the recovery, as the country grapples with an estimated $8 billion in damage from the Category 5 storm.

Amid the congregation at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest, many of whom are of Jamaican descent, Prime Minister Holness provided an update on the recovery journey after the hurricane. He commended the church and its leader, saying, “I want to first give you high commendation for your leadership. Everything that was asked of you as a leader in terms of financial and fiscal reform, you have done it.” Holness highlighted Jamaica’s proactive step of securing a $150 million catastrophe bond from the World Bank to aid in such emergencies. However, the payout covers only a fraction of the total damages.

Holness described the devastation left by Hurricane Melissa, likening it to “an atomic bomb of wind and rain” that devastated the northwestern parishes. The destruction has resulted in significant losses in homes, agriculture, and tourism, further intensifying the need for global support. Despite the challenges, Holness noted the resilience and faith of the Jamaican people, stating, “We are resilient, independent, and strong people, and they are finding their way.”

The Jamaican government has set up an official disaster and relief portal for donors wishing to contribute to the recovery efforts. Holness expressed gratitude to the church members for their support and reflected on the power of prayer during the hurricane, noting that “the people of Jamaica went on their knees in prayer, and they prayed that the storm would move past Jamaica.”

He also encouraged the diaspora and international investors to consider investing in Jamaica as the nation begins rebuilding. “I believe that is the phase where we would like our brothers and sisters in the diaspora and our brothers and sisters in the United States to come and invest in Jamaica,” Holness said. He emphasized opportunities in tourism, agriculture, and infrastructure as key areas for investment.

Pastor Bryant assured the Prime Minister of his dedication to the cause, stating, “I wanted to make a commitment to you that I’m gonna come to Jamaica before the year is over to work alongside you.” He stressed the importance of moving beyond words to tangible actions in supporting Jamaica’s recovery.
