Religious Leaders in Colombia Face Rising Threats Amid Violence

As the year began with celebrations, a tragic incident unfolded in northern Colombia, where Pastor José Otoniel Ortega was fatally shot. This incident marks one in a series of violent acts against religious figures in the country over the past year.

Pastor Ortega, 54, was attacked by armed assailants during a New Year’s Eve gathering in the Santa Elena neighborhood of Fundación Municipality, located in the Magdalena Department. According to Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), he succumbed to his injuries shortly after being taken to a medical facility.

In response to the attack, authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation alongside the Attorney General’s Office, urging the public to provide any pertinent information. This call for assistance is part of the broader effort to apprehend those responsible for Ortega’s death.

The killing has sent shockwaves through Colombia’s religious communities, with national Evangelical networks denouncing the act. Ortega was a respected leader within the Foursquare Gospel Church, although initial reports mistakenly identified him as a Pentecostal pastor.

CSW characterized the incident as a “premeditated, targeted assassination,” emphasizing the significance of the timing and method of the attack. Anna Lee Stangl, CSW’s Advocacy Director, remarked, “The nature of the attack on Mr. Otoniel Ortega, whilst he was celebrating New Year’s Eve with his family, makes it clear that this was a premeditated, targeted assassination.”

Ortega’s church described him as a committed servant of the community, while the Colombian Council of Evangelical Churches issued a statement highlighting the broader impact on the Christian community and calling for justice.

The Ministry of the Interior has stressed the importance of protecting religious figures, urging authorities to ensure their safety as part of the public’s constitutional rights, which include freedom of religion and protection of life.

This violent trend has been escalating, with at least 10 pastors killed in the past year, and a Catholic priest kidnapped, according to CSW. Among the incidents was the murder of another pastor in Magdalena in early 2025.

Religious leaders in Colombia’s conflict zones are frequently targeted by criminal organizations seeking control. Concerns have grown following recent changes to Decree 1066, which previously offered specialized protection for religious figures under Colombia’s National Protection System.

Advocacy groups are calling on international bodies to monitor these attacks and support accountability measures. As investigations into Ortega’s murder continue, his final services are set to be held at his church in Fundación.
