Matthew Queen Returns to Ministry After Legal Troubles

Matthew Queen, once embroiled in legal issues concerning a federal investigation, has resumed his role in ministry in Texas just months after completing his sentence. Queen, who previously faced a six-month sentence for deceit during a government probe into sexual misconduct within the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), is now on the pastoral team at Plymouth Park Baptist Church in Irving.

The church’s website now lists Queen among its pastoral care team. His bio highlights, “Dr. Matt Queen serves as our associate pastor. He is the husband of Hope and the father of two daughters.” It continues to emphasize his “over three decades of experience in a variety of roles and contexts as a leading voice in evangelism.”

Queen’s legal issues began when he was accused of obstructing a U.S. Department of Justice investigation. This investigation followed an extensive Guidepost Solutions report, which uncovered mishandled sexual abuse allegations within the SBC.

Although the Justice Department decided against charging the entire denomination, Queen was charged for submitting false documentation during the inquiry. The 49-year-old previously held positions as a professor and provost at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

His legal woes surfaced after a November 2022 report of alleged sexual assault by a Texas Baptist College student, which led to a grand jury subpoena in October 2022 requiring full disclosure of documents related to sexual abuse allegations. It was during this investigation that Queen was found to falsify notes—a fact he admitted in October 2024 when he pleaded guilty.

Despite facing potentially severe consequences, Queen’s sentence was limited to home confinement, largely due to character references from family and professional peers. His attorney, Sam A. Schmidt, stated, “Dr. Queen recognizes that the Southern Baptist Convention, including SWBTS, has had a history of covering up and minimizing sexual abuse allegations.” He further noted Queen’s opposition to such practices and his active support for victims.

Queen’s current role marks a new chapter as he integrates back into pastoral duties. His experience and dedication, as noted by his supporters, suggest a commitment to fostering a supportive and transparent church environment.
