A groundswell of public opposition is brewing as over 323,000 individuals have signed a petition against the proposed new stained-glass windows for the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.

The cathedral, which suffered extensive damage from a fire in 2019, saw its 19th-century stained-glass windows miraculously escape the flames unscathed. These windows, originally crafted by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, remain intact.

Despite their preservation, French President Emmanuel Macron has championed a project to replace these windows with contemporary designs by artist Claire Tabouret, showcasing scenes from Pentecost. This initiative has garnered support from Church officials, including Archbishop of Paris Laurent Ulrich, and is a multimillion-euro undertaking.

Tabouret’s designs, currently exhibited at the Grand Palais, are slated for installation next year. However, the proposal has sparked significant backlash, highlighted by an online petition initiated by La Tribune de l’Art. The petition claims, “The president of the republic has decided on his own, without any regard for the heritage law or Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, to replace the stained glass windows.”

Critics question the rationale behind discarding windows that withstood the fire, asking, “How can it be justified to restore stained glass windows that survived the disaster and then immediately remove them? … Who gave the head of state a mandate to alter a cathedral that does not belong to him, but to everyone?”

As the petition gains momentum, artist Claire Tabouret has addressed the controversy, stating to Radio France, “I want to give the public the chance to form their own opinion, because when there’s controversy, there are also a lot of rumours.”

While President Macron has yet to address the petition directly, his vision for a “contemporary gesture” and bringing a “21st century mark” to Notre-Dame has been a longstanding goal, despite facing resistance from organizations like the National Heritage and Architecture Commission.
