Renowned Christian Author Steps Down Amid Scandal

Philip Yancey, a celebrated figure in Christian literature, has announced his retirement from ministry after admitting to an eight-year extramarital affair with a married woman. The bestselling author, known for his investigative approach to faith-related topics, has decided to withdraw from public life to focus on personal restoration.

In a statement sent to Christianity Today, where Yancey served as editor-at-large, the 76-year-old expressed remorse, stating, “I confess that for eight years I willfully engaged in a sinful affair with a married woman.” He acknowledged the pain caused to the families involved and emphasized the inconsistency of his actions with his faith and professional teachings.

Yancey admitted to the moral and spiritual lapse as “my great shame,” and revealed his intention to seek professional counseling and accountability. “Having disqualified myself from Christian ministry, I am therefore retiring from writing, speaking, and social media,” he disclosed, adding that his focus would now be on “rebuilding trust and restoring my marriage of 55 years.”

Yancey, raised in a strict fundamentalist setting in Atlanta, Georgia, has long challenged traditional perceptions of God in his writings, depicting Him as a compassionate figure rather than an authoritarian presence. His literary contributions include well-regarded titles such as Disappointment with God and What’s So Amazing About Grace?

A veteran journalist, Yancey contributed to Campus Life and Christianity Today, where he became known for his unique approach to religious discourse. In a 2010 interview with The Christian Post, Yancey described his method as journalistic, exploring topics with curiosity and research rather than from an authoritative stance.

Yancey also gained attention in 2016 for his critical comments about Evangelical support for Donald Trump, describing it as bewildering given Trump’s background. Although he clarified that he was not endorsing Hillary Clinton, his remarks sparked significant discourse within evangelical circles.

Despite being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2023, Yancey continued to engage with audiences across the U.S., demonstrating resilience in the face of personal health challenges. His departure from public life marks the end of a significant chapter in Christian journalism and literature.
