Interest in Christianity appears to be growing among the UK’s political leaders, as noted by Andrea Williams, chief executive of Christian Concern. She observed a notably warmer response to her organization during this year’s political party conference season.
Williams shared in a video to supporters that Christian Concern participated in the Labour, Reform, Conservative, and Liberal Democrat party conferences. Importantly, this year’s reception was significantly more positive compared to previous years.
Three years ago, the group attended the Conservative Party conference supporting King Lawal, a Conservative councillor who was suspended by the party after expressing his views on Pride via a tweet.
This year, Christian Concern attracted considerable attention at the conference with a notable fringe event highlighting their involvement with the Darlington nurses and Jennifer Melle, medical professionals who encountered challenges related to trans ideology in the NHS.
Williams remarked, “Ten years ago to talk about the trans issue, that men are men and women are women … at a party political conference would have been extremely controversial. Today we are being mentioned from the platforms, we’re being visited by shadow ministers and even mentioned in Kemi Badenoch’s main address to the party conference.”
Beyond trans issues, Williams noted a growing recognition among political leaders in Britain that the nation is missing something crucial.
“The tide is turning, there’s a difference in the atmosphere. People realise the brokenness of Great Britain and Jesus is becoming interesting to them again,” she said.
During all the conferences, Christian Concern distributed a booklet titled “A Christian Future for Britain,” which argues that the country is facing not just economic and political challenges, but also a “moral and spiritual” crisis.
The booklet advocates for a return to Christianity as the moral foundation of the nation, emphasizing laws that protect families, ensure freedom, and respect the dignity of life from conception to natural death.
It states, “Britain cannot be renewed while rejecting the foundations on which she was built. Our laws and institutions should be shaped by a Christian understanding of humanity, justice, freedom and the common good – not by ideological systems that undermine truth, family and freedom. A confident Christian nation can be both firm in its convictions and a place where everyone can contribute and thrive.”
