Pope Francis Embraces TikTok to Engage Younger Audiences

In a surprising yet strategic move, Pope Francis has ventured onto TikTok, aiming to connect with younger generations and promote his latest publication, Spera (“Hope”). The Pope made his debut on the Italian publisher Mondadori’s TikTok account, delivering a heartfelt message from his office.

The 87-year-old pontiff expressed his gratitude for those who supported the creation of his autobiography. “I would like to thank Mr Carlo Musso, who had the patience to help me remember so many things about my life,” Pope Francis said. “The true protagonist is the Lord, who has led me by the hand and has brought me forward. I thank all those who have done this. First of all, Mr Carlo Musso. And pray for me, I will pray for you.”

Released on January 14, Spera tracks Pope Francis’s journey from his childhood in Argentina to his leadership of the Catholic Church. It delves into pressing global matters like climate change and migration, offering a glimpse into the Pope’s personal history and the challenges of his faith. The book also highlights the Bergoglio family’s migration story from Piedmont and reflects the Pope’s enduring mission to spread hope.

Pope Francis shared, “It is an autobiography, but for me autobiographies are to thank God for what he has done with my life. The book gives a sense of what I am like.”

Although Pope Francis has not established a personal TikTok account, his appearance on the platform signals his intent to engage with contemporary media. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to reach young audiences, who are increasingly active on social media.

The autobiography has stirred conversations due to its treatment of sensitive topics, including his views on the Traditional Latin Mass. Pope Francis critiques its practice by stating, “The rigidity of those who prefer the Traditional Latin Mass is often accompanied by elegant and costly tailoring, lace, fancy trimmings, rochets. Not a taste for tradition but clerical ostentation, which is none other than an ecclesiastical version of individualism.”

These comments have prompted responses from conservative Church members. Cardinal Raymond Burke commented, “Pope Francis’s message to the devout faithful who have a deep appreciation and attachment to the Traditional Latin Mass is that they suffer from an aberration which can be tolerated for a time but must ultimately be eradicated.” Similarly, Cardinal Gerhard Müller accused the Pope of “cracking down on tradition” while allegedly allowing progressives more freedom.

This social media engagement follows Pope Francis’s appearance on the popular Italian talk show Che Tempo Che Fa, where he discussed his autobiography and his broader mission during the Jubilee of Hope.

By stepping into the world of TikTok, Pope Francis joins a host of public figures utilizing the platform to communicate with younger demographics. Social media platforms like TikTok offer unprecedented reach, enabling instant connection with millions.

In the U.S., TikTok faces scrutiny over national security concerns. President Donald Trump has suggested he wouldn’t oppose the platform’s acquisition by Elon Musk, who also owns Twitter, now rebranded as ‘X’.
