Winter Storm Unleashes Severe Weather Across U.S.

As a powerful winter storm surges through the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast this weekend, residents are bracing for extreme weather conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) has indicated that the storm system is expected to grow stronger over the coming days, impacting the region through Tuesday.

The NWS bulletin issued Saturday highlights the onset of “Arctic air” in the Plains starting Sunday, followed by a “potent winter storm” moving from the upper Midwest to the Great Lakes between Sunday night and Monday. For more details, see the NWS bulletin.

Heavy snowfall and whiteout conditions are anticipated in parts of the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region, leading to hazardous travel conditions. According to the NWS, areas such as Michigan’s Upper Peninsula could see more than a foot of snow, while Western New York and Northwest Pennsylvania brace for lake-effect snow.

The storm has already impacted the Northeast, with nearly 8 inches of snow reported in New York City and nearby areas between Friday and Saturday. Traffic disruptions have been noted along the I-95 corridor, and aviation has been significantly affected, with Flightaware.com reporting over 1,000 flight delays and nearly 1,000 cancellations in the U.S. as of Saturday evening.

In addition to snow, the NWS has issued a warning about dangerous ice conditions in the Northeast. Ice accumulation could reach up to a quarter of an inch in areas of eastern New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Meanwhile, wind chills might plummet to -35 degrees in parts of North Dakota and -25 degrees in northern Minnesota.

Contrastingly, parts of the South and Tennessee Valley are experiencing unseasonably warm weather, with temperatures possibly rising to the 70s, as noted by weather forecasters.
