Global Shifts in Abortion Attitudes Highlighted at International Assembly

In a rapidly evolving global landscape, even nations traditionally known for their conservative stances on abortion may not remain immune to change. This was the warning shared by Dr. Calum Miller, a research fellow in bioethics at the University of Oxford, during his address at the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) General Assembly in Seoul, South Korea.

Dr. Miller highlighted the significant progress made by the abortion-rights movement over the past few decades, which poses a challenge to countries with strong pro-life stances. He noted an alarming statistic from the Philippines, where 70% of young people support legalizing abortion, underscoring a shift in societal values even in predominantly Christian regions.

Reflecting on the 11-year gap between the WEA’s assemblies in Thailand (2008) and Indonesia (2019), Dr. Miller pointed out that 27 countries had relaxed their abortion laws. He used Ireland as a case study, illustrating a drastic change where public support for abortion surged from one-third in 2013 to two-thirds, including an overwhelming 85% of young people, by 2018.

Dr. Miller issued a stark warning: “This rapid generational shift is coming for the Global South as well.” He emphasized that efforts to liberalize abortion laws are accelerating globally, with considerable financial influences targeting lawmakers and youth in various countries.

Nations like Nigeria, Poland, Chile, Brazil, Haiti, and Liberia face increasing pressure to amend their abortion laws. The WEA assembly, held at SaRang Church in Seoul, the world’s lowest birth rate country, occurs amid South Korea’s legislative push to allow abortion up to birth.

“Whether you live in the most conservative or the most liberal country in the world, this is something that will destroy the future of all of our countries,” Dr. Miller stated. He expressed concerns about declining birth rates globally, noting that outside of Africa and the Pacific Islands, few regions sustain adequate birth rates for population survival.

Dr. Miller concluded with a call to action for Evangelicals to unite and advocate for life, envisioning a pivotal moment of transformative change for believers to influence their nations positively.
