As Allegations Loom, Cory Mills Faces a Challenging Reelection Bid
Amidst a cloud of controversy, Rep. Cory Mills is campaigning for reelection in Florida’s 7th Congressional District. Allegations of assaulting a former girlfriend and campaign finance violations have prompted a House Ethics Committee investigation. Despite his denials of any misconduct, these accusations threaten to overshadow his campaign.
Mills is not alone in the political arena facing such scrutiny. He joins a growing list of lawmakers entangled in scandals while vying for office. While Mills has previously denied these allegations, NPR reports that his office has not offered further comments.
Although Mills’ campaign prominently displays a “Trump Endorsed” banner, President Trump has seemingly distanced himself by omitting Mills from recent endorsements ahead of the primary election. Similarly, Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has stated, “I have not endorsed Cory Mills, and I do not support Cory Mills.”
On Mills’ campaign website, endorsements from about a dozen House Republicans are listed. Meanwhile, his main GOP rival, former news anchor Ryan Elijah, has garnered support from Florida GOP Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Mike Haridopolos. The primary race also includes real estate agent Sarah Ulrich and veteran Michael Don Johnson.
The 7th Congressional District, which spans from Orlando’s northern suburbs to the coast near Daytona Beach, remains unchanged following Florida’s congressional map redraw in May. Voter opinions in the district vary sharply. Patrick Austin, a local voter, believes Mills has effectively addressed the district’s needs, stating, “He delivers for our district. He’s brought a lot of money. He’s fixed a lot of issues that we needed — that’s all I want.”
Conversely, voter Tiffany Davis expresses concerns over Mills’ potential impact on the general election, citing his “baggage” as a liability. “I think Cory Mills is going to get beat, honestly, if it comes to a Democrat,” she said. “I just don’t think I can chance it.”
The controversies surrounding Mills have complicated what was once considered a secure Republican seat. According to the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, the district’s status has shifted from “solid Republican” to “likely Republican.”
Democrats see an opportunity amid the turmoil. Penny Merthie, a Democratic voter, hopes for Mills’ victory in the primary, believing it could enhance her party’s chances in the general election. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has backed Bale Dalton, a Navy veteran and former NASA chief of staff, and is investing resources in flipping the district. Former Rep. Alan Grayson is also in the race, aiming to reclaim a seat he previously held.
