When a rideshare driver in San Antonio spotted what she initially thought was a dog wandering into traffic, she quickly realized the reality was far more alarming. Her decision to stop and investigate would prove to be life-saving, and her dashboard camera documented the entire rescue.
Michelle Gallegos was operating her vehicle for zTrip in the South Side area when she encountered an unusual sight on South Zarzamora Street, just south of I-35. As she drove along her regular route, something in the roadway caught her attention amid the flow of vehicles.
Upon closer inspection, Gallegos discovered the moving object was not an animal as she had initially suspected, but a young barefoot child running directly into active traffic lanes. The toddler appeared completely unaware of the danger surrounding him as he moved through the busy street.
Split-second decision in dangerous situation
Recognizing the immediate threat, Gallegos took decisive action. She used her horn to alert other drivers, maneuvered her SUV to the side, and exited her vehicle while traffic continued to move around her. Another truck was traveling at high speed in an adjacent lane, creating a potentially deadly situation.
“If I didn’t stop, he would have gotten him,” she said later.
The young boy showed no signs of distress or fear despite the hazardous circumstances. According to Gallegos, he was skipping and playing, seemingly oblivious to the vehicles moving around him.
Ensuring the child’s safety
After retrieving the toddler from the roadway, Gallegos placed him in her front passenger seat. Her dashboard camera recorded her gentle interaction with the child as she attempted to gather information about his home. “Where do you live, baby? Here, sit right here,” she can be heard saying in the footage. The child remained silent and did not provide any directional cues.
To keep the youngster comfortable and calm, Gallegos offered him snacks. She then drove to a nearby parking area and contacted emergency services. Law enforcement officers arrived at the location in less than ten minutes.
Authorities documented the incident and successfully reunited the child with his parents. Gallegos, who regularly works in the South Side zone for her rideshare company, noted that stray dogs are common in the area, which is why her initial assumption seemed reasonable.
The rescue highlights how familiar routes can suddenly present unexpected situations requiring immediate action. Gallegos’ awareness of her surroundings and willingness to respond to something unusual made the difference between a safe outcome and a potential tragedy.
