SPUC Urges Scottish Leadership to Oppose Late-Term Abortion Legislation
The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) is making a strong appeal to the Scottish First Minister, John Swinney, to dismiss any proposals that might permit abortions right up until birth.
Recently released data underscores the urgency of this matter, with SPUC highlighting figures that show abortion as the leading cause of death in Scotland. In the past year alone, over 18,000 abortions were recorded, marking an unprecedented number.
This trend is mirrored across the United Kingdom, where abortion rates have also peaked.
The SPUC’s plea follows the unveiling of a draft motion aiming to adopt recommendations from the Scottish Abortion Law Reform Expert Group. Critics argue that these recommendations would essentially legalize abortion until birth.
Currently, abortions are permissible up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, with extensions beyond this period allowed only under specific medical justifications.
The draft reforms suggest eliminating the necessity for a reason to terminate before 24 weeks, while also expanding conditions for post-24-week abortions.
John Deighan, SPUC’s Chief Executive, commented, “This draft conference motion represents a radical and deeply disturbing shift in the SNP’s direction.
“While previous conference resolutions supported access up to the current 24-week legal limit, this new proposal attempts to hijack the party’s platform to push through extreme recommendations from an ideological ‘Expert Group’ that wants abortion completely decriminalised.
“Removing abortion from the criminal law altogether means removing the 24-week legal ceiling. It would leave Scotland with one of the most extreme abortion laws in the world, allowing viable, late-term unborn babies to be aborted right up to birth.”
Deighan further urged that the First Minister must demonstrate “true leadership” by unequivocally rejecting any policies that would allow abortions to occur up to the moment of birth.
