California Gubernatorial Candidate Seeks to Change Transgender Sports Legislation

Amid California’s political landscape, an intriguing debate emerges as Steve Hilton, a candidate for governor, pledges to tackle the contentious issue of transgender participation in girls’ sports. This comes as the state’s Republican party sees new possibilities in the upcoming elections.

Steve Hilton, who is campaigning for the governorship, has voiced a strong stance against the current policies that permit transgender athletes to compete in girls’ sports categories. During an event hosted by Pastor Jack Hibbs at Calvary Chapel Church in Chino Hills, Hilton, along with attorney general candidate Michael Gates, presented their viewpoints on California’s pressing issues.

Hilton criticized the policy, highlighting the impact on female athletes. He emphasized the unfairness of what he terms the “obscenity of biological boys in girls’ sports,” referencing Assembly Bill 1266, which allows transgender students to join sports teams consistent with their gender identity. Hilton declared his intention to repeal this legislation if elected, arguing it contradicts both gender equality principles and Article 28 of California’s Constitution.

“It’s unconstitutional,” Hilton asserted, arguing that the current law discriminates against girls. He further committed to wearing a bracelet inscribed with “Save Girls’ Sports” until his goal is realized.

Despite California’s Democratic majority, recent polls suggest a competitive race. An Emerson College poll of 1,000 likely voters shows Republican Chad Bianco leading with 13%, while Hilton and Democrat Eric Swalwell are tied at 12%, followed by Katie Porter at 11%.

Hilton believes there is a viable path for a Republican victory, drawing attention to historical voter turnout patterns. He noted that Donald Trump received 6.1 million votes in California during the 2024 elections, suggesting that replicating this support could secure a Republican win.

In the attorney general race, Michael Gates shared his motivations for running, reflecting on his blessings and past successes. Gates aims to challenge Democrat Rob Bonta in an effort to bring Republican leadership to the state’s legal affairs.

While Democratic dominance in statewide offices remains strong, Hilton’s campaign emphasizes Republican potential, urging supporters to believe in their mission to influence California’s governance.
