The turmoil of the Sudanese Civil War has extended its reach beyond the borders of Sudan, touching lives across the globe, including a recent incident in the UK where a human rights advocate was attacked in Newcastle.

Mohaned Elnour, a Sudan specialist with Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), experienced an assault while addressing a demonstration outside Newcastle City Hall. The protest aimed to spotlight the ongoing atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Darfur.

The conflict in Sudan is marked by violent clashes between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), notably drawing international attention when the RSF seized control of El-Fasher from the SAF.

During his speech at the protest, Elnour criticized both factions, leading to a hostile reaction from some attendees who began chanting in support of the SAF. The situation escalated when Elnour was surrounded, silenced by having his microphone turned off, and physically attacked by at least five individuals.

Despite the assault, which left Elnour with multiple injuries, including a deep thumb cut, a right wrist fracture, and aggravated back pain, he resumed his speech after the crowd intervened. Authorities eventually escorted both Elnour and the attackers from the scene.

CSW emphasizes that Elnour’s experience is not isolated, as Sudanese rights activists in the UK frequently encounter threats and violence from compatriots.

Scot Bower, CEO of CSW, expressed his condemnation: “Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. We urge the Northumbria Police to conduct a detailed investigation into this assault, ensuring that those responsible face appropriate consequences.

“We applaud Mr Elnour’s courage and conviction in speaking out about the atrocities taking place in Sudan without fear or favour, and rising to address the crowd once again, moments after being attacked.”
