A routine afternoon by a creek in Winter Springs, Florida, turned into a life-or-death encounter when a teenager found himself in the jaws of an alligator. What happened next is a remarkable story of quick thinking, courage, and what his family believes was divine intervention.

Thirteen-year-old Gabriel Klimis was spending time with friends near a creek after swimming when an unexpected attack occurred. The massive reptile emerged from the water without warning and grabbed hold of the young teen. “I just felt something like tug on to me, and wrap its jaw around me and gain grip of me,” Gabriel recalled.
Teen uses nearby stick to escape predator’s grip
Rather than panicking, Gabriel sprang into action with remarkable composure. He reached for a stick within arm’s reach and used it to force the alligator’s jaws open, freeing himself from the deadly grip. “I just did what first came to mind,” he explained. His singular focus during those terrifying moments was clear: “Just try to get myself up as quickly as possible and make sure that nothing worse happens.”
The young teen successfully escaped despite sustaining a significant injury to his hip. The alligator released him and disappeared back into the water, leaving Gabriel’s companions stunned by what they had just witnessed. His brother Judah described the harrowing scene: “He got up and we saw that he had a gator bite, and everyone was in shock. I was freaking out, and I was crying.”
Injured teen maintains composure to summon help
Despite his injury, Gabriel kept his wits about him and personally dialed 911 for emergency assistance. Reflecting on his survival, he expressed profound gratitude. “It feels like good luck. I can still walk and stuff. And, I’m very thankful, because I could have not been here right now,” Gabriel shared.
His mother, Allison Klimis, was overwhelmed with emotion when she learned about the incident and saw photographs of the alligator’s size. “I just broke down crying on my lunch hour,” she said. “When, also, I saw the pictures of the size of the gator that tried to get my son. And, I knew it was an absolute miracle of God that he’s alive.”
Mother credits faith for son’s survival
Allison expressed deep relief that her son escaped with his life and mobility intact. “In the end, I’m just blessed, grateful, thankful that the angels were watching over him and God was there because I know without that, my son could definitely be gone,” Allison said.
Perhaps most remarkably, the frightening encounter hasn’t dampened Gabriel’s adventurous spirit. The teenager remains undeterred about enjoying outdoor activities with his friends. “I guess I kind of learned my lesson, but at the same time, it’s not going to stop me from swimming somewhere else, like in a different creek or something, with my friends and having fun,” he said.
The family has drawn strength from their faith throughout this ordeal, finding meaning in the biblical passage from Deuteronomy 31:6: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.“
