A routine Monday morning fishing trip turned into a life-saving mission when two teenage brothers in Carmel, Indiana witnessed a stroller carrying two young children plunge into a retention pond. Within seconds, Maddox Larger, 15, and his younger brother Grant, 14, abandoned their fishing poles and sprang into action to rescue a grandmother and her two grandchildren from the water.

The dramatic incident unfolded behind Fernleaf Way as the brothers were enjoying their fishing expedition. Maddox caught sight of the terrifying scene from his peripheral vision—a stroller racing down a steep embankment before disappearing into the pond below.

Quick thinking in a crisis

Upon hearing the grandmother’s screams, both brothers rushed to the scene. They discovered the woman battling to stay afloat with a four-year-old child strapped to her back. Neither the grandmother nor the child could swim, making their situation increasingly desperate with each passing second.

Maddox immediately contacted emergency services and passed his phone to Grant before diving into the water. “I jumped in the water and I grabbed them and pulled them out as quickly as possible,” Maddox said. “Even though it may have been a little bit of a struggle. It still worked out.”

A second child in danger

The emergency wasn’t over once the grandmother and four-year-old reached safety. The stroller had flipped upside down in the water, and a two-year-old remained fastened inside beneath the surface.

“The grandma pointed at the stroller, and there was a baby clipped inside still, and my brother took her out, and she was not breathing, so he leaned her back and patted her on the back, and she spit out water,” Grant said.

Grant’s decisive action to tilt the toddler back and tap her back successfully dislodged the water, allowing her to breathe again. By the time emergency personnel located the scene—delayed by an address error—all three victims were safely on land thanks to the brothers’ intervention.

Humble heroes

Despite their remarkable actions, both teenagers downplayed their heroism. Grant suggested that anyone else would have responded similarly, while Maddox simply stated: “It just happened. I just had to get them out.”

Their mother Lindsay offered perspective on the rescue, noting: “You’re never too young to do something to help out your neighbor.”

“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22–23 (NKJV)
