In a small Alabama community, two teenage boys on bicycles became unlikely heroes when they helped locate a vulnerable senior who had gone missing from her home.
Kathryn Whitney, 77, who lives with dementia, disappeared on a Wednesday morning, prompting an urgent search by local authorities in Satsuma, Alabama. Officers canvassed the area, hoping to find the elderly woman before any harm could come to her.
Teens enlisted to help in search
During the search along 7th Street, police officers encountered Dalton Medley and Collin Carrell riding their bicycles through the neighborhood. The officers briefed the young men about the missing woman and requested their assistance in watching for her.
Rather than simply acknowledging the request and continuing on their way, the two teenagers took the responsibility seriously. Shortly after their conversation with police, they cycled past a nearby residence where they observed an elderly woman resting in a rocking chair on a back patio.
The boys didn’t dismiss what they saw. Instead, they stopped and approached the woman to speak with her. After confirming her identity as the missing person, Dalton and Collin immediately contacted authorities.
Woman found safe after lengthy disappearance
Video footage from a Ring doorbell camera at the property later revealed that Kathryn had been sitting on that porch for approximately an hour and a half before being discovered. The teenagers’ vigilance ensured she was reunited with her worried family safely and in good health.
