A teenager’s heartfelt sermon about loneliness and divine friendship is resonating with people who have experienced the pain of rejection. Caleb Svangren, just 14 years old, recently stood before his church congregation to deliver a message that transformed his personal struggles into a powerful testimony about God’s unwavering presence.

The young preacher began by expressing gratitude to his parents and church leaders for giving him the opportunity to share. He then vulnerably recounted a difficult season during his seventh-grade year on the football team that many people could relate to.

A lonely bus ride becomes a divine revelation

During team bus rides to football games, Caleb experienced repeated rejection from his teammates. “Every single bus ride to the games, I’d have an empty seat next to me. And I’d look at them and they look at me and they look at the empty seat and they just keep on walking,” he recalled.

This painful pattern took on new meaning during a prayer experience when Caleb had a vision of Jesus eagerly coming to sit in that vacant seat beside him. This moment became the foundation for his three-part message to the congregation.

The dangers of withdrawing after rejection

Caleb’s first point addressed the temptation to isolate ourselves when others reject us. “Just because you’ve been rejected by the world because you’re unstained does not mean that you shouldn’t fit in,” he explained, emphasizing that God intentionally designed each person’s unique personality. He referenced Proverbs 18:1 to illustrate how choosing isolation can distance us from sound wisdom.

God’s desire for intimate friendship

The central theme of Caleb’s sermon explored God’s longing for relationship with His children. Drawing from Jeremiah 3:19, he shared God’s words: “I would love to treat you as my own children!”

The teenager explained that God’s jealousy stems from His knowledge of what’s truly best for us. He urged listeners to welcome Jesus into their lonely spaces and aching hearts, pointing to God’s commitment in Hebrews 13:5, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Taking initiative in relationships

Caleb’s final point challenged his audience to actively pursue friendships with others. He presented the idea of becoming a “friendship leader” – someone willing to make the first move. “Maybe you have to be the friendship leader. Maybe you have to be calling. You do the checking in. You do the listening,” he said. He backed this encouragement with John 15:13 and its teaching on sacrificial love.

“I went out to find a friend but could not find one there, I went out to be a friend and friends were everywhere.” Caleb wrapped up his message with a thought-provoking question: “How many times has your Father in heaven been the one in the bus seat waiting for you to sit down next to Him?”

The sermon demonstrated how God uses people regardless of their age to communicate profound spiritual truths. Caleb’s transparency about his struggles and his insights into God’s faithful companionship offered comfort to anyone who has felt excluded or isolated.
