When 14-year-old Ryen Harris-Contreras was accidentally shot in the head on Christmas Day, doctors gave his family little reason to hope. But what followed has been described by those closest to him as nothing short of divine intervention.

The Texas teenager was spending his Christmas evening in Groesbeck with his closest friend, preparing for a rabbit hunting trip they had undertaken numerous times previously. A small-caliber rifle was present, and both boys assumed the weapon contained no ammunition. When the firearm unexpectedly discharged, a bullet struck Ryen directly in the head.

Critical condition and emergency surgery

Medical emergency personnel transported Ryen by helicopter to McLane Children’s Hospital in Temple, where surgical teams immediately began working to preserve his life. The severity of his brain injury required surgeons to remove part of his skull to address the trauma.

Medical professionals advised the family to brace themselves for the possibility that Ryen might not survive his injuries. Despite the grim prognosis, his loved ones maintained their spiritual convictions during the critical hours he spent in intensive care.

Signs of recovery emerge

Known as an active child who enjoys football and basketball, Ryen gradually began showing signs of improvement. His aunt Shelby encouraged supporters to “Watch our boy work and WALK out of that hospital.”

Progress came incrementally. During medical examinations, Ryen began moving his legs. He responded by squeezing a nurse’s hand and eventually opened his eyes. Medical staff were subsequently able to remove both his breathing apparatus and brain pressure monitoring device.

His mother attributes her son’s recovery to divine intervention, witnessing him overcome the dire predictions initially presented by medical professionals. “When doctors said there was no hope, God whispered, ‘Watch what I can do,'” she said. Looking at her son now, she says, “This isn’t just a survival, this is a miracle.”
