When three-year-old Casey Hathaway disappeared from his great-grandmother’s backyard in Ernul, North Carolina, a massive search operation was launched that would end with an incredible tale of survival. The toddler’s account of how he endured two nights alone in harsh conditions has captivated people with his claim that a bear kept him company during his frightening ordeal.

Casey had been playing outside with his two siblings when the children were called back indoors. While the other two came inside as instructed, Casey was missing. After searching the surrounding area for 45 minutes without success, his family contacted emergency services.

Massive search effort deployed

The search for the missing toddler mobilized an extensive response team that included the FBI, local law enforcement agencies, rescue workers, community volunteers, and drone operators. These teams combed through more than 1,000 acres of difficult terrain in their effort to locate the young boy. Unfortunately, severe weather conditions including strong winds and heavy rain forced search teams to temporarily halt their operations until it was safer to continue.

Rescue came from an unexpected tip

After two days had passed, the Craven County Sheriff’s Office received a crucial call from a local resident who reported hearing the cries of a young child calling out for his mother. Following this lead, rescue teams ventured approximately 50 yards into the wooded area where they discovered Casey caught in thorny vegetation across a river. Although he was soaking wet from the elements, the child was remarkably unharmed. Rescuers provided him with water before bringing him back to his anxious family.

The young survivor’s explanation for his wellbeing surprised everyone involved in the rescue. According to Casey, he had spent his time in the wilderness with a bear that kept him safe.

His aunt Breanna Hathaway shared the remarkable story on her Facebook account, writing, “Casey is healthy, smiling and talking. He said he hung out with a bear for two days.” She continued, “God sent him a friend to keep him safe. God is a good God. Miracles do happen.”

Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes expressed amazement at the outcome, stating that the young boy’s survival through such a difficult experience was truly extraordinary. Following his rescue, Casey received medical attention at the Carolina East Medical Center for minor injuries including cuts and bruises. Medical staff reported he was in good health and positive spirits.
