Tom Ascol Steps In as Acting President at Founders Seminary After Voddie Baucham’s Passing
A significant leadership change has occurred at Founders Seminary in Florida, with Pastor Tom Ascol taking the helm as acting president. This transition follows the tragic death of the seminary’s inaugural president, Voddie Baucham, a well-respected theologian and author.
On October 7, the Board of Directors of Founders Ministries confirmed Ascol’s appointment during a pivotal meeting. Ascol, who also serves as the president and chancellor of Founders Ministries, expressed his sorrow at the loss of Baucham. He shared, “He and I looked forward to working together for years to come with him in that position. But the same God who kindly lent Voddie to this great work has called him home.”
Ascol praised Baucham for being the only person he envisioned leading the institution at its inception. He emphasized the seminary’s mission to train church leaders with “sharp minds, warm hearts, and steel spines,” underscoring that this vision continues even in the wake of Baucham’s passing.
The board’s chairman, David Mitzenmacher, expressed confidence in Ascol’s leadership, noting that the board is unanimous in its belief that the seminary’s mission will not only be sustained but also thrive. “The board is united in its confidence that, with God’s help, the seminary’s mission will not only continue but flourish,” he stated.
Founders Seminary, which opened its doors earlier this year, welcomed its first cohort of 30 students in August. Baucham, who was the seminary’s first president and a professor of cultural apologetics, was known for his staunch defense of biblical principles. He passed away in September following a severe medical incident, leaving behind a legacy of theological dedication.
Founders Ministries announced the news of Baucham’s death on social media, saying, “We are saddened to inform friends that our dear brother, Voddie Baucham Jr., has left the land of the dying and entered the land of the living.” The announcement paid tribute to Baucham’s commitment to his faith and his impactful service, since his conversion during his college years.
The news of Baucham’s passing led to an outpouring of condolences on social media. Former Southern Baptist Convention President J.D. Greear shared his grief on Twitter, saying, “Brokenhearted to hear about @_VoddieBaucham going home to be with the Lord. Praying for his wife, kids, and grandkids. He preached here several years ago and did an incredible job. He really blessed our people.”
