Midwest Grapples with Aftermath of Devastating Tornadoes

Communities across the Upper Midwest are in recovery mode following a series of tornadoes and severe storms that swept through the region over the weekend. The extreme weather events left a trail of destruction, damaging numerous homes and causing widespread power outages.

The National Weather Service reported “numerous” severe storms across parts of Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri on Friday. A total of at least 66 tornado reports were submitted from states including Oklahoma, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Despite the severity of the storms, no fatalities have been reported.

In Minnesota’s Marion Township, about 30 homes suffered damage due to a tornado, with a dozen facing significant destruction as reported by the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office. In Stewartville, at least 20 homes were affected, and a temporary shelter has been set up in Rochester for those displaced, according to MPR News.

“Tornado disaster recovery continues to occur at full speed,” stated the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday.

In Illinois, the McClean County officials declared a disaster emergency in Bloomington due to severe storms. “At this time, no injuries have been reported, and emergency response agencies remain actively engaged to ensure public safety and continuity of essential services,” officials noted in a statement.

In contrast, the village of Lena experienced profound damage from an EF-2 tornado. The NWS highlighted that “many homes and outbuildings were damaged, trees uprooted, and power lines downed,” with numerous roads blocked by debris. The Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office provided updates on their Facebook page.

According to Chief Deputy Andy Schroeder from the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office, no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported in connection with the storm. Over 43,000 customers in Illinois lost power, but ComEd restored electricity to nearly all by Saturday night.

Wisconsin also faced several tornadoes, with the NWS office in La Crosse issuing 26 tornado warnings on Friday—the highest number in a single day since the office’s establishment in 1995. In Marathon County, a tornado destroyed 75 homes, particularly affecting one residential area. “It took out a whole residential area,” Ringle Fire Chief Chris Kielman told Wisconsin Public Radio.

The American Red Cross of Wisconsin is providing assistance to those affected by the storms, offering meals, shelter, and support. Meanwhile, parts of the state continue to contend with severe weather and tornadoes that brought flooding earlier in the week.
