In a tragic revelation that has stunned Hollywood and fans alike, medical investigators have determined that legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa died from separate causes in their Santa Fe home, with their bodies discovered on February 26. The 95-year-old Oscar winner’s death was attributed to heart disease, complicated by advanced Alzheimer’s disease, while his 65-year-old wife succumbed to a rare rodent-borne illness.

Details of the dual tragedy

Chief Medical Investigator Dr. Heather Jarrell revealed that Hackman, who was found in the home’s entryway, likely passed away about a week after his wife’s death. “Mr. Hackman showed evidence of advanced Alzheimer’s disease,” Jarrell stated. “He was in a very poor state of health. He had significant heart disease, and I think ultimately that’s what resulted in his death.”

Arakawa’s death was attributed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare but deadly disease transmitted through infected rodent droppings. Investigators found her with scattered pills and an open prescription bottle in the bathroom, though these were not linked to her cause of death.

Investigation findings

Initial concerns about carbon monoxide poisoning were quickly ruled out by authorities. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza, along with state fire and health officials, conducted a thorough investigation, collecting personal items including two cellphones and a monthly planner from the couple’s residence.

According to Dr. Jarrell, Hackman’s advanced Alzheimer’s condition suggests he may not have been aware of his wife’s passing. Hantavirus, which claimed Arakawa’s life, typically surfaces during spring and summer months when people are more likely to encounter mouse droppings in poorly ventilated spaces.

Hackman, known for his illustrious acting career, and his wife Arakawa had made their home in Santa Fe, where they lived quietly away from the Hollywood spotlight in their later years.
