In a heartbreaking incident, a missionary father and his daughter lost their lives in a plane crash in Florida. The unfortunate accident took place on Monday when they were en route to deliver aid to Jamaica following a devastating hurricane.

The victims, Alexander Wurm, aged 53, and his 22-year-old daughter, Serena Wurm, were on a humanitarian mission to provide relief to hurricane-stricken Jamaica. The crash happened in the Coral Springs area of Fort Lauderdale.

The organization Ignite the Fire, which was founded by Wurm and focuses on missions in the Caribbean, confirmed the tragic news. A statement on social media paid tribute to their selfless dedication: “Together, their final journey embodied selflessness and courage, reminding us of the power of service and love.”

Serena Wurm was remembered for her commitment to humanitarian efforts, being described as “a beacon of empathy and hope, inspiring all with her commitment to humanitarian work”. The message concluded, “Rest in peace, Alexander and Serena – your light endures in all whose lives you changed.”

The aircraft they were traveling in, a Beechcraft King Air, went down in a pond near residential areas at approximately 10am local time. The plane had been a recent addition to their resources, as shared by Alexander Wurm on social media, where he expressed his enthusiasm for using it to support Caribbean communities.

He had shared his excitement about the aircraft’s role in their mission, saying it was “perfect for the mission to bring relief goods into Montego Bay and the plane is ready just in time!”

Jamaica is still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, which resulted in 45 casualties and extensive damage since its landfall on October 29.

Regrettably, Alexander and Serena Wurm were the only ones on board and perished in the tragedy.

Sean Malone, founder of Crisis Response International, highlighted Wurm’s significant contributions to aiding Caribbean nations. “What I can tell you about Alex is that he had a huge vision for the people of the Caribbean nations, and when this hurricane happened, he didn’t hesitate. He sprung into action and did what he could,” he stated.

Malone further praised Wurm’s impact, saying, “He really made a difference in the lives of the people on the ground by getting the resources in that he did. He saved lives and he gave his life.”
