U.S. Military Capture of Maduro Sparks Plans for Venezuelan Transition

The announcement came during a press conference at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, following a successful military operation.

The military raid, described by Trump as akin to precision operations that took out ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Iranian officer Qasem Soleimani in previous years, was heralded as a significant victory. Trump emphasized, “Not a single American service member was killed, and not a single piece of American equipment was lost.”

In a bold proclamation, Trump stated, “We’re going to run [Venezuela] until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” highlighting the importance of maintaining control to prevent a return to previous instability.

As Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, face trial in New York for drug trafficking and narco-terrorism conspiracies, the U.S. president declared that large American oil companies will invest in rebuilding Venezuela’s oil infrastructure.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth praised the operation’s execution, warning other adversaries to heed the U.S. show of strength. “This is about the safety, security, freedom and prosperity of the American people,” he stated.

Operation Absolute Resolve, as it was named, took months of planning. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine mentioned the operation’s stealth, conducted in the early hours of January 2.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio labeled Maduro as an illegitimate leader, drawing attention to the $50 million bounty on him that need not be paid. Rubio also pointed out that Maduro had ignored several generous offers to avoid this outcome.

Trump remained vague about the timetable for U.S. governance in Venezuela but alluded to the Monroe Doctrine, asserting American influence in the Western Hemisphere through what he coined the “Don-Roe Doctrine.”

China has openly criticized the U.S. military action as a violation of international law, with their officials having met with Maduro shortly before the strike. This adds a diplomatic layer to the unfolding situation as nations react to the U.S.’s decisive measures.
