Global Tensions Loom as World Leaders Gather for G7 Summit

As President Donald Trump prepares for a significant G7 summit in France, the focus is expected to shift towards the rising conflict with Iran, overshadowing other pressing global issues.

In addition to meeting French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump will also engage with other European leaders, despite previous disagreements on topics like trade, Ukraine, and security. The summit will include both group and one-on-one discussions with key Middle Eastern leaders, as well as a working session with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to senior U.S. administration officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The agenda promises to tackle a variety of global concerns, including economic growth, supply chain resilience, illegal immigration, and the advancement of artificial intelligence, as noted by one official.

However, what was initially intended to address separate economic and security matters has been overtaken by worries over escalating energy prices and geopolitical tensions, revealing divisions among the world’s leading democracies. “There is no doubt Iran is going to dominate the agenda at Evian,” stated Brett Bruen, a former National Security Council member during the Obama administration. “It’s a major economic and political challenge.”

The strained relations between the U.S. and its G7 allies regarding the conflict in Iran became apparent when Trump announced a withdrawal of at least 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany, amid disputes with European nations over their hesitance to back the U.S.-led initiative in Iran. This decision was later partially reversed, redirecting the troops to Poland, but it highlighted the security implications of challenging or displeasing the U.S. president.

Constanze Stelzenmüller, a transatlantic security expert at the Brookings Institution, emphasized the unpredictability of meetings involving Trump, noting, “The president’s volatility is legendary. He could get upset very quickly. He can be charming at other times. And he can whiplash between one or the other in the blink of an eye.”

On the flip side, the tension has inadvertently bolstered European unity. Nathalie Tocci, a former top EU foreign policy adviser, pointed out that U.S. pressure has prompted European governments to draw closer and seek greater strategic independence. “The Europeans are in a much better place now than they were a year ago,” she remarked, highlighting a newfound firmness in their stance on certain issues.

Despite this newfound cohesion, Europe faces challenges due to the ongoing conflict and its economic repercussions. France and the United Kingdom are collaborating to form a coalition for demining the Strait of Hormuz once a peace agreement is established. Trump has expressed the expectation that European and other Western nations dependent on the strait will participate, a topic likely to be discussed at the summit.

Meanwhile, Trump aims to prioritize strengthening economic ties, investment partnerships, and the critical mineral supply chain while addressing pressing global concerns like innovation, AI, and the Ebola outbreak.

Observers like Bruen, who will be attending the summit, have noted the limitations of an “America First” approach during such global crises. “If the United States can’t contain the fallout from a military operation of our choice against a single country, that at best is a middling power,” he commented. “How on earth are we going to be able to push back against a larger power, a nuclear power.”
