Trump and Zelenskyy to Discuss Peace Deal Amid Intensified Conflict

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — As the holiday season unfolds, President Donald Trump is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Mar-a-Lago, aiming to negotiate a peace agreement to conclude nearly four years of conflict following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

President Trump, who has been spending the holidays at his private club in Palm Beach, Florida, will address security and economic matters with Zelenskyy, who intends to bring up “territorial issues” concerning the contested Donbas region in eastern Ukraine.

Amidst ongoing tensions, Russia has escalated its military actions by targeting Kyiv with missiles and drones, increasing pressure on Ukraine’s leadership.

“Ukraine is willing to do whatever it takes to stop this war,” Zelenskyy expressed on X. He emphasized the importance of strength at the negotiation table, while noting that global support, including from Europe and the U.S., is crucial to halting Russian aggression.

In a recent meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Zelenskyy stressed that “pressure on Russia and sufficient, strong support for Ukraine” are essential for peace. Carney announced an additional $2.5 billion Canadian (US$1.8 billion) in aid to help Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts.

The meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy signifies progress made by negotiators in recent discussions. A 20-point draft proposal for peace is reportedly “about 90% ready,” according to Zelenskyy, aligning with U.S. officials’ optimistic assessments.

As part of the draft, the U.S. has suggested offering Ukraine security guarantees akin to NATO’s, contingent upon Ukraine withdrawing its bid to join the alliance.

Intensive Negotiations Ahead

Zelenskyy recently consulted with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner regarding ongoing discussions. He cautioned that while progress has been made, “the weeks ahead may also be intensive” as sensitive issues remain unresolved.

President Trump, who has aimed to end the Ukraine conflict since returning to office, has acknowledged the challenges in resolving the situation. He previously urged an immediate halt to hostilities, suggesting that Russia could retain its occupied territories.

Key unresolved issues include territorial disputes, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, and funding for Ukraine’s recovery. Technical concerns related to security guarantees and monitoring systems are also under discussion.

Zelenskyy has indicated a willingness to demilitarize eastern Ukraine if Russia reciprocates and international forces oversee the area.

Putin’s Stance on Territorial Claims

Russian President Vladimir Putin insists on retaining territories captured by Russian forces, including the Crimean Peninsula. He demands Ukraine abandon its NATO aspirations and restrict military deployment by alliance members, viewing them as “legitimate targets.”

Furthermore, Putin calls for Ukraine to limit its military size and recognize the Russian language officially. Russian Foreign Affairs Adviser Yuri Ushakov noted that Russian forces might remain in certain areas, even under a demilitarized zone.

Negotiations face challenges as U.S. proposals, accommodating Russian demands, have been altered by Ukraine and its allies. Trump appears open to some of Putin’s conditions, believing economic incentives could facilitate Russia’s reintegration into the global economy.
