As Nigeria stepped into the New Year, a series of violent attacks rocked the nation, marking another grim chapter in the ongoing insurgency. Between December 28 and January 3, militant activities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt claimed the lives of 50 individuals.

Known as the deadliest country for Christians, Nigeria’s alarming death toll surpasses that of any other nation, with predictions suggesting that unless the extremist threat is curtailed, the number of killings could double by 2026.

Amidst this turmoil, the Nigerian government has declared a national emergency, vowing to double police forces and collaborating with the US to conduct airstrikes against militant strongholds in the north.

Interestingly, these latest incidents did not specifically target Christian communities. The majority of the casualties were from a massacre in the village of Kasuwan Daji.

Bishop Bulus Dauwa Yohanna of Kontagora, speaking to Aid to the Church in Need, described how the attackers set fire to markets and homes before executing 42 men, both Christians and Muslims, and abducting an unidentified number of women and children.

The Bishop identified the perpetrators as bandits who have operated with impunity, noting their previous attack on a Catholic church in Sokonbora where they vandalized religious artifacts and stole valuables.

In response to the attacks, many residents have fled their homes, fearing further violence from these bandits.

Bishop Yohanna condemned the attacks, stating, “This senseless, barbaric and inhuman act of violence is a grave violation of the sanctity of human life and human dignity.”

He urged the region’s ethnic groups to remain united against violence and called for governmental intervention to eradicate the bandit threat.
